The Monty Python comedian John Cleese summed up the "Dunning-Kruger effect" once as:
“If you are really, really stupid, then it’s impossible for you to know you are really, really stupid.”
The Dunning-Kruger effect is the idea that incompetent people are the last to realize it. Now we’re realizing that could be wrong.😉
It appears from a new study that "stupid people" have the innate ability to sense they're stupid...
Which now begs the question: Does that then make them smart? 🤔
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias whereby people with low ability, expertise, or experience regarding a certain type of task or area of knowledge tend to overestimate their ability or knowledge. Some researchers also include the opposite effect for high performers: their tendency to underestimate their skills.
In popular culture, the Dunning–Kruger effect is often misunderstood as a claim about general overconfidence of people with low intelligence instead of specific overconfidence of people unskilled at a particular task.
So if you're not totally confused at this juncture....take into consideration that the conclusions were arrived at after researchers created 1,154 fictional people and randomly assigned them both a test score and a self-assessment ranking compared with their non-existing peers.
The Dunning and Kruger study divided these fake people into quarters based on those test scores they were assigned. Because the self-assessment rankings were also randomly assigned a score from 1 to 100, each quarter will revert to the mean of 50. By definition, the bottom quarter will outperform only 12.5% of participants on average, but from the random assignment of self-assessment scores they will consider themselves better than 50% of the imaginary test-takers. This gives an overestimation of 37.5 percentage points WITHOUT ANY HUMANS INVOLVED.
Kinda like these theoretical mathematical projections being put forth without actually counting any ballots by some "election integrity" groups suffering from the Dunning-Kruger effect; AND THEY KNOW IT...‼️🤣 #NewtonSaidIt
